The Moments
“Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst, for I will do mine! Then the fates will know you as we know you: as Albert Mondego, the man! ”
– My favorite quote from “The Count of Monte Cristo”.
It’s funny how the biggest changes in our life only take a moment. One moment of not paying attention when you’re driving, one moment for a relationship to start and one moment for it to end, one moment for the words ‘I do’ to cross your lips and for them to next say ‘I want a divorce,’ one moment for a life to start and one moment for a life to end. One moment for all your dreams to come true and one moment for them all to be stripped away. One moment… And our lives are altered permanently.
It all happens so fast and we are never prepared for it and before we know it were caught up in a storm of emotions and craziness. But not just any storm. No. It’s never just a simple storm. It’s a hurricane. And we’re left with an aftermath that sometimes is just too messy to handle by ourselves. And this doesn’t take a moment; this cleaning up. It takes a lot of moments. And when we finally think we’re all done and the world is once again quiet, that’s when we look out the window and see that one final mass of black clouds and we hear the rumbles left over from the destruction that just passed through and we know that it isn’t over yet. There’s more work to be done. More endless days and more sleepless nights. More moments. More laughs and smiles and hugs and kisses.. More tears and sobs and broken hearts. And that favorite tree of yours that the hurricane tore from the ground will never stand again. Will never live again.
But in its place a new tree can be planted and watered and cared for. And this too takes many moments. But given the proper care this tree will grow strong and beautiful and one day will be another persons favorite tree to climb, to swing from, to read under. And the moments we spend working and cleaning and trying to make all those single moments where life as we knew it ceased to exist make sense.. these are the most precious moments.
One moment, and our lives are forever changed. That’s all it takes. Many moments to take our changing lives and turn them into something beautiful.
One moment. Many moments.
Make them count.
